Make a Song Slower and Deeper

Make any song slower and deeper in your browser. Drop the pitch 2 to 6 semitones with the speed slider, add bass and darken the tone for weight, and export MP3.

Open the free editor: upload MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG or FLAC, adjust speed, reverb, bass, tone, width and space, then export MP3 or a ZIP of many tracks. Everything runs in your browser.

Making a song slower and deeper is one move in this editor, not two. Drag Speed below 1.00x with Preserve pitch off and the track gets slower and lower together, because that is how playback rate works. A voice that was bright and forward drops into the chest. Drums loosen. The whole thing gains weight. This page is about that pitch drop: how much you get at each speed, how far different voices can go before they break, and how to use Bass and Tone to make the deep version feel solid rather than just slow.

The reverb side of the style is covered on the slowed reverb maker page. The two tone controls have their own pages, Bass and Tone. If the key matters more to you than the depth, the lower pitch of a song page explains what this tool can and cannot do about pitch on its own.

How speed turns into depth

Pitch is frequency, and playing audio at a lower rate lowers every frequency by the same factor. Musicians count that in semitones. Each semitone is a frequency ratio of about 1.059, so dropping one semitone means playing at about 0.944x, two semitones about 0.891x, and so on. The table below is the one to keep open.

Speed Semitones down What it does to a voice
0.94x 1 Barely noticeable, slightly warmer
0.89x 2 Noticeably fuller, still sounds like the same singer
0.84x 3 The classic slowed depth, voice sits in the chest
0.79x 4 Deep, clearly altered, works on high voices
0.75x 5 Very deep, many higher voices start to read as a different singer
0.71x 6 Extreme, consonants start to blur
0.63x 8 Instrumentals only in most cases
0.50x 12 A full octave down, novelty or sound design

Two points to take from the table. The relationship is not linear: the first three semitones cost you 0.16x of speed, the next three cost 0.13x. And a semitone is a big unit. Two semitones is already a change most listeners will hear. Three is the slowed sound. Beyond five you are in special-effect territory.

How far can a voice go

The right drop depends on where the voice already sits. A deep drop on a voice that is already low turns to mud. The same drop on a high, light voice sounds rich. These are starting ranges, judged by ear on typical pop and R&B production.

Voice type in the original Comfortable drop Speed range Where it breaks
High female, soprano range pop 3 to 5 semitones 0.84x to 0.75x Below 0.70x, breath and sibilance smear
Mid female, alto 2 to 4 semitones 0.89x to 0.79x Below 0.75x, loses the singer's identity
High male, tenor, falsetto hooks 3 to 4 semitones 0.84x to 0.79x Below 0.75x, falsetto turns hollow
Mid male, baritone pop 2 to 3 semitones 0.89x to 0.84x Below 0.80x, words start to drag
Low male, deep rap vocal 1 to 2 semitones 0.94x to 0.89x Below 0.85x, consonants blur into the bass
Group vocals, choirs 2 to 3 semitones 0.89x to 0.84x Below 0.80x, the blend turns to drone
Instrumental, no vocals 4 to 8 semitones 0.79x to 0.63x Depends on the kick, listen for flab

When in doubt, start at 0.84x, listen to the chorus, then move in steps of 0.02x. If the words are still clear and the voice sounds like a person, you can go lower.

Adding weight with Bass and Tone

A slowed, deepened track is lower in pitch, but that does not automatically make it feel heavy. Often it feels dull and a little thin, because the top end dropped along with the bottom and nothing was added below. Two controls fix that.

Bass is a low shelf from -6 to +12 dB. Raising it adds body under the deeper voice and gives the kick a chest hit. Most deep edits want +4 to +8 dB. Go past +8 only on sparse instrumentals, and check a phone speaker before you commit, because phone speakers cannot reproduce the lows and the mix may sound empty there.

Tone is a high shelf from -10 to +10 dB. Cutting it darkens the top, which does two things: it hides the stretched artifacts that slowing exposes, and it makes the deep voice sound closer and more intimate rather than distant. -3 to -6 dB is typical. The built-in Haze Chamber preset goes to -10 dB with +12 dB Bass for the heaviest possible version; see the Haze Chamber preset page for how that lands on different material.

Recommended Bass and Tone by how deep you went:

Semitones down Bass Tone Why
1 to 2 +2 to +4 dB -1 to -2 dB Small drop, small correction
3 +4 to +6 dB -3 to -4 dB The standard slowed balance
4 to 5 +6 to +8 dB -5 to -7 dB More darkness to hide artifacts
6 or more +8 to +10 dB -7 to -10 dB Instrumentals, heavy and dark

Step by step

  1. Add the song. MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG or FLAC.
  2. Make sure Preserve pitch is off. If it is on, the song gets slower but not deeper.
  3. Set Speed from the voice table above. 0.84x if you are unsure.
  4. Raise Bass in 2 dB steps until the kick feels solid.
  5. Lower Tone in 1 dB steps until the harshness goes without the vocal going dull.
  6. Add Reverb only if you want the room sound. A deeper voice with 20 to 30% Reverb and 2.4 s Space sounds intimate. Leave it at 0% for a dry deep version.
  7. Preview against Dry, then download the MP3.

What this tool will not do with pitch

The pitch drop here is a by-product of speed. You cannot lower the pitch and keep the original tempo, and you cannot lower the pitch by a precise interval independently of the speed slider. If the song needs to be deeper and still at full tempo, this is the wrong tool, and a DAW with a pitch shifter is the right one. The lower pitch of a song page goes through that trade-off honestly.

The export is MP3 at 96 kbps, 32 kHz, encoded in the browser. Fine for YouTube, TikTok and Shorts. Not a master, and there is no WAV option.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a song slower and deeper at the same time?

Set Speed below 1.00x with Preserve pitch off. Speed and pitch drop together. 0.84x is about 3 semitones lower, the classic slowed depth.

How many semitones does a slowed song usually drop?

Two to four. 0.89x is about 2 semitones, 0.84x about 3, 0.79x about 4. Below that most vocals lose clarity.

Can I make a voice deeper without slowing the song?

Not in this editor. Pitch follows speed here. A DAW with a dedicated pitch shifter can lower pitch at the original tempo.

Why does my deeper version sound dull instead of heavy?

The top end dropped with the pitch and nothing was added underneath. Raise Bass by 4 to 6 dB and the deep version will feel solid.

How far can I drop a female vocal?

Three to five semitones, 0.84x to 0.75x, works on most. Below 0.70x breath and S sounds start to smear.

Does a deeper edit need reverb?

No. Slower and deeper with 0% Reverb is its own style, sometimes called daycore. Add 20 to 40% Reverb if you want the full slowed + reverb sound.
